Seasonal Work

The Lifeguard/Instructor will instruct Lifesaving Society Swim For Life Swimming Lessons throughout the season as well as instruct various exercise sessions. Lifeguards are expert swimmers trained in rescue and first aid, who ensure the safety of swimmers at recreational sites.

This role may be required to work on a rotating shift at both locations; scheduled hours will be dependent upon the pool schedule and may include early mornings, days, afternoons, evenings, and weekends. Flexibility in scheduling is required.

Core Responsibilities: 

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 

  • Always maintain a high standard of safety supervision.
  • Supervise the use of the pool area and facilities.
  • Provide effective emergency response, executing proper rescue techniques and providing first aid within the scope of their training. Liaison with appropriate emergency services personnel to ensure effective transfer of care as dictated by the situation.
  • Follow protocols and assist to maintain the cleanliness and disinfection of the aquatic facility, pool, change rooms and washrooms and ensure the facilities are well maintained.
  • Performs lifeguarding functions including observing persons in facility, enforcing safety rules and regulations, maintains order in the swimming and deck areas, aids persons in danger of drowning and provides First Aid treatment.
  • Provides excellent customer service to all internal and external customers including front desk support.
  • Perform lifeguard duties in accordance with established safety regulations and policies.
  • Participate in all staff training sessions.
  • Keeps Head Lifeguards informed of pool maintenance needs.
  • Follow assigned rotation, communicate with co-workers and superiors of any guest issues.
  • Ensure rescue equipment is in good working order/report otherwise
  • Complete accident and incident reports when necessary.
  • Keep the pool area neat - pick up towels, toys, training equipment, etc.
  • Safe and effective instruction of swim classes as assigned.
  • Performance of water rescue and first aid when necessary.
  • Teach correct progressions for the assigned level
  • Screening of participants in classes and move to appropriate level if necessary.
  • Keep records of participant’s progress and attendance throughout series of lessons.
  • Timely completion of individual progress cards and worksheets on completion of each instructional session.
  • Complete accident and incident reports when necessary.
  • Preparation of lesson plans for swim classes instructed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Must be a minimum of 15 years of age or older
  • National Lifeguard Pool (NL), or willing to obtain prior to start date.
  • Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor, or willing to obtain prior to start date.
  • Standard First Aid - CPR “C”, or willing to obtain prior to start date.
  • Physical strength, stamina and coordination to carry out the duties of the position.

Please note the Township will cover 50% of the cost to obtain certifications for new lifeguards and 100% of the cost to recertify existing lifeguards.

Lifeguard certifications include: National Lifeguard Pool, Lifesaving Society Swim for Life Instructor, Standard First Aid, CPC “C”, Aquatic Supervisor Training (Head Lifeguards).
